PHASE II UPDATES

*Email govbrd@susd.org to share with Dr. Menzel and the Governing Board what Phase II changes would mean for your family.  If you don't want to reach out directly, PTO will be putting together a Redfield Community Statement of Support in the coming days and will be asking families who support that to add their signatures. This allows us to collectively share our position without asking hundreds of families to send the same form letter and potentially overwhelm the Governing Board's inboxes.

 The Board memo shows that Option C is the strongest model when the priorities are minimizing disruption, retaining current SUSD families, preserving established school communities, and creating long-term stability. Option A has a stronger case only if the priority is pursuing future enrollment by growing Cheyenne, but it requires significantly more student movement and disruption. Option B scores lowest overall.

OPTION A — Redfield and Laguna Merge 

Redfield and Laguna would close their current buildings and their students would become the neighborhood population for a new school at the current Cheyenne campus. In the recommended model Redfield and Laguna Students would continue to feed into their current designated middle schools creating a split feeder situation. This is done to maintain the culture and offerings at Desert Canyon Middle. The board could also consider boundaries where the new school feeds either Desert Canyon Middle or Mountainside.

Cheyenne’s current school-of-choice program would move to Copper Ridge, and Copper Ridge students would be zoned to the Desert Canyon campus. 

For Redfield families, this means:

• Redfield’s building would close.
• Redfield students would attend the new neighborhood school at the current Cheyenne campus.
• Redfield and Laguna would create a shared, new identity, with a new school name and mascot.

OPTION B — Redfield stays open - Laguna and Desert Canyon Buildings Close

Redfield remains open and a portion of the Laguna students would move to Redfield. Desert Canyon Elementary and Middle close, moving all students to Copper Ridge campus as a true K-8. 

For Redfield families, this means:

• Redfield remains open.
• Redfield would absorb a portion of Laguna’s current zoned boundary. 
• Redfield Middle school boundaries considered here are: Desert Canyon at Copper Ridge, or Mountainside 

OPTION C — Redfield stays open - Laguna and Copper Ridge Close

Laguna and Copper Ridge close, spreading their zoned students to various schools based on home addresses. 

For Redfield families, this means:

• Redfield remains open.
• Redfield would absorb a portion of Laguna’s current zoned boundary. 
• Redfield Middle school boundaries considered here are: Desert Canyon or Mountainside

Feeder Patterns:

Desert Canyon Middle needs Redfield as a feeder school to maintain the enrollment necessary to support its broad range of electives, athletics, extracurriculars, and overall middle-school model; simply adding Copper Ridge students will not make up the difference. Redirecting Redfield to Mountainside will change the culture and offerings at Desert Canyon Middle, including most likely relocating CGP. Board Memo Summary:

• Three options remain: A, B, and C were selected from eight models for deeper study.
• The rubric considers five areas: students, finances/academics, facilities, long-term sustainability, and community impact/feasibility.
• A and B affect more than 2,100 students, while C affects approximately 773.
• Option A prioritizes growth potential, particularly expanding the Cheyenne Traditional program.
• Option C affects the fewest students and emphasizes stability and retention of current SUSD families.
• Desert Canyon’s future includes the possibility of becoming a K–8.
• The Board memo is not a recommendation: the Board will ultimately weigh the data, tradeoffs, and public input before making its decision.
